Audegn, a word one had never heard before is now being emerging as the most successful start-up on campus. With a modest start through a freelance project. Founded by Sonesh Jain (B.Arch 5th Yr.) along with four others in his second at IITR, Audegn has grown exponentially with a turnover of Rs. 2.76 Crore as of Sept. 2013. Although all the 4 others left, Sonesh paved the way for Audegn to make it what it is today.
##The Beginning
It all started with a freelance project done for a Bangalore firm from his hostel room in college when one of the Sonesh’s design was spotted by a friend’s friend who offered him a project which was done under the name of Design Desk. With time it evolved into Audegn and began its operations from March 2, 2011.

##The Roller-Coaster Ride
The initial members were individually perfect but their combination wasn't. They failed as a team. Priorities, vision, modus operandi and most importantly the amount of dedication differed which gave them a rocky start. The team went through a lot of emotions causing frustration and exhaustion at times. Eventually, later in 2012, each one of them opted out of Audegn except for Sonesh. Sonesh considered Audegn his only life. From designing to dealing with clients to branding to managing operations, he did everything for the company. In short, Sonesh and Audegn became synonyms.
##Current Status
There was a brief time recntly during which operations of Audegn stopped. But with a new vigour, the team has bounced back and did so with a boom. The current team includes Aman Awasthy, Rishab Garodia, Anirudh Mittal and Amlan Mishra, all from third year Architecture with Sonesh leading them.

##What does 'Audegn' exactly do?
Initially, their services were limited to advertising designs but they have diversified with time. Anything and everything ‘seen’ about a company now lies in their spectrum of services offered. From logo designing, identity, product designing, content writing, online campaigns to social media management, Audegn does it all. Designing solutions, web designing, apparel designing and architecture of the modernist philosophy too come under their services.

##In conversation with founder and CEO, Sonesh
*Q. Why was a break taken at a time when Audegn had one of its most successful years and what future do you see for it?*
A. Although Audegn was doing well, it had the potential to grow into something much bigger. The services we provided were also increasing. As the saying goes ‘Take a step backward in order to leap further forward.’ Therefore to bounce back with greater vigour, the break was needed. I see it amongst top branding companies across the globe in future.
*Q. How did Audegn grow and what challenges did you face?*
A. Challenges we faced were many and we did fail a lot of times. Maintaining acads, saving and reinvesting, team spirit is what we weren't able to manage. But we survived and so did Audegn only because we kept moving forward. Participating into various events, exhausting our network and long hours of work we put in did all the miracle..
*Q. What sets you apart from your competitors?*
A. Dedicated client relationship, designing responsibly, designing from scratch, understanding clients needs and nurturing them, fresh thinking, the amount of dedication we put in and the importance we give to detail sets us apart from most of others in this area.
*Q. What advice do you give for budding entrepreneurs?*
A. Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted. Money you enjoy wasting is wasted. Save your money and learn the art of Jugaad. Secondly, find time to call back at home or someone who loves you, for things you love and for yourself. It will give you the much needed spirit to carry on. Lastly, think big plus think all the time. I assure you that you will make it happen if your thoughts reflect in your work. Finally, I believe we should believe in what our heart believes.
Audegn's story is indeed exemplary and Team EDC wishes Sonesh and his team a prosperous road ahead.

The Convocation 2013 invited the recently graduated IIT R junta to relive some of the golden moments of their lives in their Alma mater. Entrepreneurship Development Cell, IIT Roorkee (EDC) decided to bridge the existing gap between the freshers and the alumni by organizing an interactive session between the two. The session was aimed at eliminating all the existing doubts in the minds of the young first yearites regarding their lives at IIT R. The open session was also attended by the 2nd and 3rd year students who intended to seek guidance for their career.
The session invited many talented (or the so called “phodu” in college lexicon) ex-students to share their IITR experiences and enlighten the present students about their current endeavors. The guest speakers were a very gifted bunch of individuals with the likes of: Pranav Agrawal, Piyush Makhija, Akshit Khurana, Shashank Shekhar, Shreyansh Thakur, Yash Rane, Razak Gupta, Digendra Singh Rathore and Yadwinder Paul Singh . Each of the distinctive personalities came up with their own notions on their life at campus. However the one thing that was common to all was: Live your life to the fullest.
**Razak Gupta**, an Int. MSc Maths pass-out and currently pursuing degree of MBA at IIM Calcutta, emphasized on the use of ‘interstitial time’ at the campus. He defined it as the time that we get between various activities of the day and gets wasted otherwise. He established the importance of contacts on the campus and off-the campus that we make on our stay here.
**Akshit Khurana**, a CSE pass-out, currently working for SlideShare, came out very differently on the idea of having fun in campus. His message to the students was to pursue their interests and never waiver from taking risks. He ended on a lighter note advising, “Don’t give advice unless are asked for one.”
**Shreyansh Thakur**, currently employed in Royal Bank of Scotland, also asked the students to go where their intuition guides them. He defined entrepreneurship as his passion and his stay on campus as a very joyful journey. He was one of the co-founders of Audegn which later became one of the most successful student start-up.
**Yash Rane**, ASME India, stated a fact quite clearly: The way you spend your free time here at the campus will determine who you turn out to be. He advised the students, especially the first years, to try everything, every group on the campus and to be confident . “Get over your fears- face them, this is what I wrote on my wall upon entering IIT”, he remarked.
**Digendra Singh Rathore**, a Mechanical Engineering graduate and an entrepreneur, came up with his whole life story. In the most friendly way, he explained how he ended up being an entrepreneur with his batch-mate Yadwinder Paul Singh. His life story revolved around the most basic things that govern the dynamics of a student’s life. His raw nature and a typical Indian style of storytelling was admired by the crowd in general. He also talked about his start-up and how he expects to grow from it. He explained the importance of teamwork and mentioned that all of his work on campus and that of his start-up bore results only because of an effective team.
The session came to the final round of questions from the crowd, after Piyush Makhija, an ECE graduate and a PPO from Samsung and Pranav Agrawal (employed in Schlumberger) gave a brief introduction of their lives at IITR.
“CAT or GMAT?”, “Time management on campus ?”, “How to decide what career path to choose ?”, “Which group to join?” and many such queries were handled very satisfactorily by the aforementioned individuals.
The crowd laughed and the people cheered as the session finally approached to an end. Each of the invited pass-outs was presented with a small memento on behalf of EDC. Anshul Chauhan (B.Arch. 2nd year) hosted the event and delivered the vote of thanks to them.
The event witnessed a very healthy turn-out from the students of IIT R.

What does it take to build a start-up? Does one need exorbitant entrepreneurial skills, an intricate and detailed business plan, a great team, right investors? Of course all these are inevitable, but coming up with an idea that creates a business and provides a value which is not currently being provided lies at the core of a start-up. Two year ago, Nishant Chandra (IITR 4th year, P&I student, Secretary of EDC), founded Bookshelf, a books-rental platform, with a simple mission of promoting the reading culture in IITR. Since then, they have tried new things and tested new platforms to make the process of renting and reading smooth and lucid.
##Concept and the Working Model
Although there is no dearth of people who are fond of reading books in IITR, there are not many provisions for providing renting and reading services. The institute library holds an umpteen number of books, but most of them being technical in nature narrow the service-horizon. This is when Bookshelf comes into picture. They have a number of novels spanning from science fiction, biographies, history, romance, thrillers to much more. One can select a book from a given list, pay a deposit, and the book will get delivered to his/her room. On returning, a very nominal amount is deducted and the deposit given back.
The deposit is a meagre Rs 100 for any book. The rent for 10 days is just Rs 20 which cannot ever make it not affordable for anyone. Another convenience value provided by Bookshelf is their room-delivery service, which makes it all the more lucrative.
##Collection and Ordering
The books which are in the collection are owned by fellow students. The owners whose books get rented get half of the rent paid for it. Hence, it provides a quintessential ‘value-for-all, incentive-for-all’ model.
##Community
Bookshelf’s trying to promote reading culture by directing people to Goodreads.com. There, you can check out the books your friends have read and see suggestions for further reading. You can also join the IIT Roorkee community on Goodreads by clicking here.

How can YOU help?
They are currently looking for students who wish to contribute and help them to expand their collection. So do get in touch.
##In Conversation with Nishant:
*Q) How would you describe your initial experience with ‘Bookshelf’?*
A) The idea of starting ‘Bookshelf’ struck me in the third semester. I love reading books, and so I already had a decent collection of books with me. I shelled out some money from my pocket to buy some more novels and this set the machinery working. In the beginning, books were circulated only in Rajiv Bhawan and there were only 4 contributors. The business reached break even in a short period of time, but there was no competitive streak in me. During this time, another similar start-up had started gaining popularity among the students. This was a turning point for Bookshelf. I started focussing on marketing strategies, which were previously being ignored. A small team was built and we worked together to make it a successful venture.
*Q) What are your future plans for ‘Bookshelf’?*
A) It is more of an initiative than a start up. Currently, our team comprises of eight members and we circulate around 300 books per semester. We would like to explore more opportunities in the campus and also optimise the reading experience that we provide.
*Q) Any advice you would like to give to the budding entrepreneurs who wish to start a business venture?*
A) It is necessary to have a clear idea of what you want in your mind. While planning a business structure, one must maximise consumer information and aim at developing a minimum viable product. This prevents chaos and eliminates uncertainty regarding the product. Coming up with an idea is extremely important, but putting your plan into action is what really helps to bring your entrepreneurial skills to the fore. The fundamental activity of a start-up is to turn ideas into products, measure how customers respond, and then learn to plan your further actions.
